Bwindi Conservation for Generations Foundation is championing afforestation, the creation of forests, in the southern sector of Bwindi. Although Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is both a national park and a UNESCO world heritage site it still suffers from the effects of logging. As both the human population and that of the mountain gorillas continues to increase it is anticipated that there will be more conflict in the coming years.
The foundation plants thousands of seedling trees at their demonstration gardens and cares for them until they are big enough to plant, some of these go to local schools and communities whilst the rest are planted in various locations within the district.
The focus is not only on raising indigenous tree species but also non-native trees that are fast growing such as pine or eucalyptus. These are suitable to be used for charcoal and timber, the main reasons to fell trees, and it is hoped that by planting more of these trees it will help to protect the indigenous ones.
