Bwindi Food & Homestay Experience

The Bwindi Food & Homestay Experience has been designed to introduce visitors to the local way of life within the community. The tour starts by visiting a local homestead and meeting the family that will be hosting you for the day, giving you a chance to see how warm and welcoming the culture is.

It is then out to the garden to learn about the different produce that is grown in the region and the various methods used to grow and harvest it. You will notice that there is no machinery used, only basic hand tools and sheer man power. After seeing what vegetables are ready to harvest, you will work together to gather food using the methods taught by your host.

From the garden you will return to the kitchen where you will help to prepare a traditional Ugandan meal. Due to the high cost of meat, most meals are vegetarian and use a combination of vegetables and legumes, however if you have any specific dietary requirements please discuss these with us beforehand.

After learning the local ways in which to prepare and cook food, such as using charcoal fires, you will then be ready to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Sitting down with the family you will be able to discuss how daily life is as well as the benefits and hardships amongst the communities around the national park.

What to bring:

Shoes to work in, comfortable clothes, rain jacket, sun cream, snacks and drinking water.

The Bwindi Food & Homestay Experience generally takes around 4 hours and costs $40 per person.
